Chapter Twenty-five

Sophia’s shock had kept her quiet. While Sam moved in on her, she’d been working it out in her mind that he must be Governor Regan’s brother. And the only reason he’d come on to her at the restaurant in the first place was to infiltrate her mission to remove his niece and nephew from his brother-in-law.

It made total sense. Why he’d latched on to her, and why he was doing so now. His sister must have put him up to it. He didn’t want to take any chances that she’d ignore him, and he’d be out of the picture. Did he even know she was FBI?

Fury engaged. She zeroed back to what his lips were doing. She shouldn’t have – it proved to be her downfall. This man knew his way around a woman’s body… and her emotions.

Carried away and fighting to keep her cool, she decided to give him just a few more minutes of foreplay before she lowered the boom. Except, she had to admit that everything he was doing to her, turned her on more.

His hands worked magic and his lips tasted better than any others. His sighs of enjoyment soon turned to pants of anticipation, and she noticed the same sounds coming from her own mouth. Obsessed with lust, she tasted his lips, let her mind follow his hands, and just as she thought about how he’d feel inside her, she found the strength to stop.

Quickly turning away so he couldn’t see her own pained expression, she waited to hear what he had to say for himself. It took a few moments of tension-filled silence before he spoke.

“How did you figure it out? When?”

“Oh, you had me fooled until a few minutes ago. Then you spoke your sister’s pet name, and I remembered looking at a photo of you with her. The one she had on her desk. It was you in your… hmm, I’d say early twenties? No beard but the eyes are the same. And… they’ve had stories of you in the paper, about your agency and the good work you’ve done for various firms. Finally, I’m trained FBI. I’m ashamed I didn’t pick it up right away. I must be losing my edge.”

“Nah! I’m good at playacting, even if I say so myself. You weren’t supposed to find out until we had the kids back. In the case that you might need assistance, I’d have stepped forward. I figured if we were linked, I could keep better tabs.”

“Linked? Like this? With you coming on to me?”

“God, no. This was never supposed to happen. I just couldn’t help myself.”

“Yeah? Right. Well, from now on, keep your hands to yourself. The only reason I’m not kicking your sorry ass out of here is because I’ll need you to help with Stasia. Those traffickers won’t be willing to give up their income easily, and I want them off this island. If I could blast them right out of existence, I would.”

“You can’t, but I can. And will. I’ve called a team to come here, and they’ll be undercover working the angles. We’ll get these bastards, Sophia. I give you my word.”

She stared at him and saw the real man, not the vacationing actor standing tall. He meant every word he said, and she believed him. Good. Now she could get busy with the real reason for her trip.
