“Geez, you’re fast. Do you always talk to yourself?” a deep voice said from deep in the brush behind me.
“Go away,” I demanded as I stood on shaky legs, mentally cursing my bout of bad luck. Biting back a groan as I put my weight on my leg, I felt Asher’s large hand grab my arm to assist. Immediately I swatted away his touch and told him that I was fine. I knew it was too much to ask him to go back to his house. He was too close of a friend of my father’s to allow me to go back to the house alone. He’d feel responsible for my fall and my safe return.
With a hobble in my step, I made my way toward the back of my parent’s property, not caring if Asher followed even though I knew he was there. There was no way I couldn’t feel his stare on my back as I took each step. It was as electric as he was when he took the stage with Edge of Black.
As I twisted the knob to the door and glanced over my shoulder, my eyes settled on the curious expression on Asher’s face. “I guess you’re coming in?”
“You guessed right.” God, I loved his voice. It was like a warm blanket that I wanted to wrap around my body and snuggle into on a cold day.
“Out of obligation, I’m sure.” I opened the door and gestured for him to go ahead of me.
“Obligation,” he replied as he scooted past me.
Damn. Now I was alone with the man I’d crushed on since I was a pre-teen and he thought of me as nothing more than a favor to his friend.
And here I thought the day couldn’t have gone any worse. Fate said checkmate.
