“Okay,” she yawns, falling back to sleep.

The next time he opens his eyes, the bed is empty, and there’s no head between his legs. No, in fact, his bathroom door is shut, and he can hear her getting sick. The toilet flushes as he scrambles out of bed and across the cold wooden floor. He raises a hand to knock when he hears a bunch of pills hit the tile.

“Shoot,” she mutters.

He knocks gently. “You all right, baby?”

There’s a pause. “Yeah. I’ll be right out.”

The door opens after a minute. She’s pale, and her eyes are bloodshot.

Cole shakes his head and reaches for his cell phone. “I’m going to call Dr. Rice. You need to get looked at.”

“I saw my doctor three days ago,” she says as he reads a text from his phone. “Cole, umm…”

“Shit!” he curses as his phone vibrates in his hand, seeing Frank is coming to the house this morning. “I gotta get going.” He turns to look at her. “Savannah, promise me, call Dr. Rice.” His head’s spinning. He doesn’t want Frank to do this today.

Her face drops a little but quickly recovers. “Yeah, all right.” She smiles and reaches for her bag.

“I’m sorry.” He rubs his face and gives her a quick kiss on the lips. “I just worry about you.”

Savannah drops her eyes to his chest. “It’s fine, don’t worry. I will call. I’m going to go say hi to everyone, then I need to head back into town. I work tonight.”

“Don’t leave without saying goodbye. I don’t care if I’m busy. Interrupt, all right?” She nods but still won’t look at him, and he glances at the clock. “I need to get ready.”

Savannah

I watch him head into the bathroom then quickly dress as doubt creeps up on me. I can’t say anything; it would only bring him more stress.

Abigail is in the kitchen feeding Mark’s bottomless pit of a stomach. I slip onto the stool next to him and feel my pill kick in. The last thing I want is Abigail or Sue noticing my behavior is off and guess at the pregnancy.

“Hey, Savs.” Mark grins, holding a forkful of waffle. “Hungry?”

“Muh.” I reach for his wrist and steal the waffle off his fork. “So good.” I grin, and he glares at me.

“You dare come between me and my food?” He laughs, spearing another bunch and drenching it in syrup.

My jaw drops as I look over his shoulder. “Umm.” He turns to see what has my attention, and I snag his fork, jamming another mouthful of his waffle in my mouth.

“You went dick deep with that move, Savi. You just asked for it!” He pushes away from the island and wipes his mouth. “I’m going to give you a five-second start be—”

I don’t wait for the rest of the sentence. I take off and head toward the living room but see Cole coming down the stairs. “Cole!” I shriek, running over to him and laughing so hard I can barely breathe. “Help!” I wrap myself in his arms as Mark comes running over.

“Give her up, Logan.” Mark holds out his hand then rubs his forehead with a dramatic sigh, but I see the amusement in his eyes. “She stole my food, man.”

“You made it so easy.” I grin, holding Cole tighter.

Cole’s laugh makes me want to hear it again; it’s so playful and fun. “What do you plan to do to her?”

“The snowbank is looking mighty fine.” He smirks.

“You wouldn’t!” I turn to look up at Cole and give him the best bedroom eyes I can muster. “How much time do you have before Frank arrives?”

“Oh, you play dirty.” Mark lets out a loudhaand holds up his hands. “You owe me a cheesecake for this little stunt.”

“Deal.” I look up at Cole, who’s shaking his head at me. “What? You were going to hand me over.”

“Never.” He smacks my ass just as the doorbell rings. “I gotta go.”
