I fill him in on as many details as I can remember and answer a ton of his questions, including a few I wasn’t comfortable with.
“So, you didn’t give him any signals that would prompt him to come on to you?”
“No!” I snap angrily. “I told you we didn’t get along since the moment we met.”
“Can we get on with this?” Daniel asks, annoyed.
“Was York involved in my poisoning?” I ask.
“I can’t really answer that.” Frank shifts on the couch.
“Well, I guess I can’t really answer any more of your questions.” I fold my arms as my temper rises.
Scoot bats my hand, but Cole takes over the rub so I can focus.
Frank lets out a long sigh and presses his lips together while he thinks. “Yes, we believe he was.”
I nod, letting that information sink in. “Why? I haven’t done anything to that man. Why would he try to kill me?”
“He wasn’t trying to kill you—”
“Says you.”
“He was trying to send a signal to The American as to where you are. If you went to a hospital, they would have entered your file online, and it would pop up to anyone who knows where to look for a case of poisoning by tetrahydrozoline. Thankfully, Logan was able to figure this out and stop the doctor before he entered it.”
I turn to Cole. “I guess that’s two times you’ve saved my life.”
His expression is so troubled I want to ask him what is wrong, but I can’t.
“Savannah, we have a problem,” Frank says bluntly. “It was bad enough when we found out The American was involved in your abduction, but now to know he’s in love with you, that’s—”
“Wha—What?” I set my drink down heavily on the table. “What are you talking about?”
“Pronto serás mia, mi amor.”
I look at Mark, then Cole, remembering my conversation from last night.
“Soon you’ll be mine, my love,” he clarifies for me.
My blood pressure drops through the floor as I stand, suddenly chilled. I awkwardly sit on the stones next to the fire.
“I’m sorry, I thought you knew what it meant,” he says, taking in my reaction.
“No.” I shake my head in confusion.
“You were in no state to hear what it meant,” Cole explains, his expression worried. “I couldn’t risk you disappearing into the woods again.”
“Savannah,” Frank pulls my attention back to him, “we know York has connected with someone who has ties to The American. There’s a chance he may have given up your location. I feel it’s best you come with me to Washington until we get this cleared up.”
So many things run through my head at once, and all I can do is hold on until my brain catches up.
“I know you’re comfortable here, but if The American is on his way—”
“So, you don’t know for sure,” I manage to whisper.
“No. York won’t talk to us.” Mark steps toward me. “He’ll only talk to you.”
“Mark!” Cole snaps, and I jump.
