“Yep. I got a lot to do too.” A thought occurred to me, and I had to ask. “Will your boyfriend be mad?”

I was pretty sure the guy from her bed wasn’t her boyfriend. As far as I knew, she hadn’t spoken to him once since she’d been down here, hadn’t mentioned missing him, and even now, it took her a second to realize who I was talking about.

Her mouth curved into an enigmatic smirk. “He’ll be terribly jealous. He might even come down here to beat you up.”

I shook my muffin in faux fear. “Better not tell him. I’m too pretty to take a beating.”

“You’re right. Your nose was artfully broken previously. If Liam got ahold of you, all that might be ruined.”

Without giving it a thought, I touched the bumpy ridge of my nose. “Glad we got that settled.”

Her nod held finality in it. “Me too.”

She left the room, and I watched her go, just like I had five years ago. After all this time, I could still look back and say it was the best, most selfless decision I’d ever made. Letting her walk away today didn’t feel quite as right. Not even close.
