“Nope.”
His brow cocked. “Maybe he wrote you a love song.”
I snorted. “I don’t think so.”
“Not a romantic?”
I started to say no but caught myself. Adam had certainly done incredibly sweet things for me. Was he being romantic?
Fortunately, Malik wasn’t really interested in my answer. Adam was ready to begin.
Malik spoke into the mic again. “Let’s run straight through. We’ll make any adjustments we need to, all right?”
Adam held up his thumb.
Silence fell in the studio. Adam’s head was down as he started to play. His fingers plucked at the strings like he’d been born with the knowledge of this instrument. It was second nature.
I pressed my hand to my headphones as if I could push the music deeper into my ears. And that was before he began to sing. The first whisper of his voice had me sitting upright. He was humming, and he strummed faster, the melody quickening along with my pulse.
I’d never heard Adam sing before. Not alone. He sang with Iris on stage. He’d hummed in my ear when we listened to music or danced together. But I hadn’t even known what his singing voice sounded like until this moment.
Smooth. Clear. Cool rain on a warm day. His voice was a pleasure to listen to. He might not have been able to belt out a ballad like Iris could, but stripped down and raw, just him and his guitar in the recording studio, he sounded powerful.
If I hadn’t been working, I would have closed my eyes to really absorb every note. But I sat on the edge of my seat, alternating my attention from Malik’s hands to the lyrics.
My traveling time’s gone cold
I’m coming home from the same old
Now I’m back here again
Back here with you, my sweetest friend
Got tied down for you
Now I’m tied up in you
I’m constantly knocking on your door
Just need to talk a little more
’Cause I’ve always been the black sheep
But you bring out the best in me
Never goin’ home again
Not without my sweetest friend
Home is where you are now
But there are things I don’t say aloud
Like my heart and soul are yours for sure
If you promise to always open the door
Tied down for you
