“You know damn well that she did,” Knox grumbled. “How could you not stop me from hiring her? If you wanted to save your relationship with your new wife, you should have hired Beck as your assistant.”

“But I didn’t need a new assistant and you did, Knox,” Ace defended. He was starting to wonder if he’d be able to convince his old assistant to give him another chance and come back to work for him, but he knew that would be impossible. His old assistant had been supposedly poached by a competitor who wanted to teach him and Ace a lesson. Well, lesson learned.

“I’d love to know what you plan on doing to make this all right,” Ace said.

“Make it right?” Knox asked. “How the hell am I supposed to do that?” he questioned.

“I have no fucking idea,” Ace grumbled. “Listen, I’m on my honeymoon and my new bride will only tolerate me being on my cell phone for a few more minutes—so talk fast.”

“I can’t work with Beck,” Knox said. “You need to help me fire her. I know I fucked up and made this mess, but I need for you to clean it up, Ace. Hiring Beck Dax was a huge fucking mistake.” He looked up to find Beck standing in his open doorway. He hadn’t even heard her come in; he was so busy yelling at Ace. “Fuck—have to go,” he breathed and ended his call.

“Beck,” he said, standing from behind his desk. She held up her hand, effectively stopping him. “Let me explain, please,” he begged.

“No,” she shouted. “I got the message, loud and clear. You have nothing to explain. I’ll be out of your hair in no time, Mr. Heart.” She turned and the thought of her walking out of his office made him panic. He couldn’t allow her to leave or he’d never be able to convince her that he was the biggest fuck up she’d ever met. Although, judging from the hurt in her eyes, she had already figured that part out.

“Wait,” he ordered. Knox crossed his office and quickly shut his door, turning to stare her down. “We need to talk, Beck.”
