Beck

Beck texted Rainey to let her know that she was on her way over and warned her sister that she was going to be using all the bad words. Rainey had texted back that the only kid she currently had at home was her two-year-old, Ella, and that she was down for a nap. Her sister said that if she whispered all of the curse words, she could have at it.

She played the conversation with Felicity in her mind over and over. Beck wasn’t sure who or what to believe but, she needed time to think. She had only known Knox for a short time and had only been with him one night. Beck trusted Ace and Trinity and if they said that Knox was a good guy, she’d breathe a little easier. Calling them was next on her “To do” list, but a part of her hated that she’d be interrupting their honeymoon.

Beck pulled into Rainey’s driveway and up to her big, white house. She had always loved her sister’s place. It was always so happy and cheery up until she lost Jack. Watching her sister go through all of that was heart-breaking. Rainey and Jack loved each other unconditionally and seeing her sister mourn the love of her life was one of the most awful things she’d ever witnessed. That big white house was finally becoming a place of happiness and joy again and that was all due to her sister being the best mom for her four kids.

She parked and grabbed her purse and cell phone from the front seat. There were three missed text messages from Knox and at least a dozen missed calls. “Nope,” she whispered. She turned her phone back off and shoved it into her bag. She wasn’t ready to talk to her boss yet. Beck was sure that if Felicity was right, he’d come up with every excuse in the book to get her to “understand” his side of the story and she wasn’t ready to do that.

She knew better than to ring the doorbell and wake up her niece—her sister would kick her ass. Rainey met her in the front entryway with a glass of wine and a box of tissues. “I wasn’t sure which you’d want, so I brought all of the provisions you might need.” Beck reached for the wine and drank down about half the glass, making her sister giggle.

“Wine it is,” Beck said.

“How about you tell me what’s going on and then, I’m going to help you finish off the rest of the bottle of wine before I have to walk to the bus stop and pick up my kids,” Rainey said.

“Well, buckle up,” Beck breathed, taking another sip of her wine. “It’s a damn long story.”

“So, things with the boss didn’t go as planned?” Rainey asked, leading her sister to the kitchen.

“Oh—they went very well,” Beck insisted. “I did exactly as he planned and fell into his bed. Hell, I even bought the whole, ‘I want a relationship with you’ bit that he fed me. God, I was a fool.”

“Let me get this straight,” Rainey said, pouring herself a big glass of wine. “You went on a date with your boss, ate dinner, fell into bed with him, had sex, and now you what—hate him?”

“Hate is a strong word, but pretty much,” Beck admitted.

“What happened between you two having sex and you driving over here?” Rainey asked, getting right down to the jest of the problem.

“A blond named Felicity happened,” Beck grumbled.

“Ahh—it’s always a blond,” Rainey said, rolling her eyes. She sat across the table from Beck and nodded for her to go on.

“Right,” Beck said, clearing her throat. “I got up this morning and Knox drove me back to my place. I went to the gym at the casino, hoping to get a workout in before having to shower and head up to my desk.” She sipped her wine again, needing a break.

“I’m guessing that was when the blond happened?” Rainey asked.

“Yep,” Beck said. “She was working out on the treadmill next to me and she asked me how things were going with Knox. She seemed to know an awful lot about him, so I started asking questions. That was my first mistake,” Beck grumbled. “She was Knox’s assistant before me and she told me that he was a very demanding boss who liked to call her at all hours of the night,” Beck said.

“Shit,” Rainey whispered.

“Yeah—so, I high-tailed it out of the gym, grabbed my stuff, texted Knox that I was taking a sick day, and drove here.”

“Did she come right out and admit that she had a fling with your boss?” Rainey asked.

“Not exactly,” Beck admitted. “She said that she knew that he made demands on his assistants both day and night. When I asked her how she knew that she told me that she held my job before Knox hired me.”

“Well, here’s a crazy idea,” Rainey breathed. “Why not ask Knox what this Felicity woman meant by her accusations?” Yeah, that would be a crazy idea because it would mean that she’d have to actually want to talk to Knox, and she didn’t. Beck needed to calm the hell down before she even thought about talking to her boss.

“I’m not ready for that. If I talk to Knox, I’ll believe him,” Beck admitted.

“Is that such a bad thing?” her sister asked.

“Yes, because I’ll be following my heart and believing him might not be such a smart idea. What if Felicity was telling the truth?”

“You said she still works at the casino?” Rainey asked.

“Yes,” Beck confirmed. “Why?”

“Well, if she and Knox had a fling, as you like to say, then, why would he let her stick around? Wouldn’t he want to get rid of her before moving onto his next assistant, um—you, in this case?” Beck stared her sister down as if she had lost her mind.
