“Then I guess I’ll just say yes.”

“Come here.”

She stood up and then sank onto the mattress, cuddling into my body as I tugged her closer. Lifting her head, her pretty green gaze focused on my face. One hand cupped my chin as she leaned in and pressed her velvety lips against my own. The kiss was pure heaven.

When she tried to lean back, I deepened the kiss, keeping us pressed together as long as I was able. Dizzy, I had to rest against the pillows for a few seconds. Cara smiled, pushing my hair back off my forehead.

“I want to go home.”

“We will, my angel,” I promised. “Soon.”

“I’m still your angel?” She asked, teasing.

“Until the day I die.”

Cara dropped her head onto my shoulder as my eyes fluttered, exhaustion taking over. “Sleep, my hero.”

I wasn’t sure what I had done to deserve that tile but if she thought so, I wasn’t going to argue.

Rae

“WOW!” I CRIED OUT, clutching my stomach. “Peter!”

He ran into the kitchen as I stirred the pasta sauce for dinner, a panicked expression on his face. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” I laughed, “unless you count being kicked by your son. Holy cow, he’s strong.”

Pete beamed a wide grin as he placed his hand over rounded belly. Over the last couple of weeks, I’d really started to show. Our little one was growing rapidly, and the movement had gone from little butterfly kisses in my belly to soft little kicks and tickles.

We stood a few seconds in silence and then our son kicked again. Another big one.

“Holy shit!” he cursed. “I felt it!”

“Right? That boy is gonna be a wild one. He never lets me sleep, always demands spicy food, and loves the sound of your voice.”

“How do you know he loves my voice?” Pete asked softly.

“Say something to him.”

Pete lowered to one knee and placed his hands on either side of my belly. Pressing his lips close to my stomach, he began speaking to the baby. “I can’t wait to meet you. Your mom thinks you’re gonna be a handful, but I actually know you’ll be amazing. I’m gonna love you every single day and we’re gonna –”

His words were cut off when our son answered.

“He kicked me!” Pete’s voice was full of awe. “Wow.”

“See? He does that whenever you walk into the room.”

Pete stood, one hand still resting on my stomach as he leaned in and kissed me. “Have I told you how much I love you?”

“Because I’m giving you a son?” I teased.

“Well, making him sure was fun.”

I swatted at his arm. “You’re terrible.”

“Nah, I just love you more than I could ever say, my Rae. This extra part, our baby, it just adds more love.”

“Oh, Peter.” Tears filled my eyes and I dropped the sauce spoon, slipping my arms around his neck. “You make me so happy.”
