The phone went dead. Abe hurried to tell Lisa that he’d find Preston Sant then hung up. A rap came on the door before he could talk to Rachel.

Abe pulled it open and one of the front desk employees stood there in a raincoat, taking a beating from the rain and wind. “Sir I need you and …” He looked past him to Rachel. “Miss Jewel, there you are. I need you both to come with me to the main building.”

“Miss Jewel will come with you; I need to find Preston.”

The guy’s mouth turned down. “Mr. Sant seems to have disappeared sir, he’s not in his bungalow or his office.”

“Are the helicopter and all the boats accounted for?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Then he hasn’t left the island yet. Call someone and get the keys out of the helicopter and any boats.”

The employee complied quickly.

Abe thought of the blonde woman Rachel had caught a glimpse of. Preston could be hiding her somewhere. When the employee hung up Abe asked, “Are there any unused bungalows?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Can you take me to them?”

The guy looked reluctant but he nodded. “There are raincoats in that closet.”

Abe tugged open the door just off the entry, handed Rachel a raincoat, and put one on himself.

Abe turned to Rachel. “We’ll take you to the main building then go find Preston.”

She shook her head, her eyes determined. “No, I’m going with you to find that snake. He’s stolen from my brother and you.”

The employee’s eyes widened at her declaration.

“I’d feel better if I knew you were safe,” Abe said.

She put her hands on her hips. “I’d feel better if we stopped wasting time and found that loser.”

Abe couldn’t resist a quick kiss. “You’re amazing,” he whispered against her lips.

“I know,” she said in response, yanking the hood of the raincoat up. “Let’s go.”

She took his hand and tugged him out the door. Abe pulled on his own hood and went willingly into the howling wind and slashing rain. No matter how his gut was churning contemplating Preston’s betrayal, he was thrilled to have her by his side. He’d follow Rachel Jewel anywhere.
