Surprise flickered in Tori’s eyes, along with something else. Interest? Curiosity?
She thinks I’m hot?
Chapter Three
Amix ofemotions had hit James at once. Confusion. Anger. And something hot and needy that was growing low in his belly.
“You’re provoking me,” he’d warned softly.
“Am I?” Her words were just as soft and her brow arched. “Maybe it’s because you’re just so damn easy to provo—”
He kissed her. Grabbed the back of her head, pulled her close, and covered her mouth with his.
When she gasped in surprise, he plunged his tongue past her lips.
She didn’t try to pull away, and a moment later, she was ready to fight, meeting the punishing lashes of his tongue with some of her own.
He stroked and sucked, blinded by anger and arousal. Intoxicated by the surprisingly sweet taste of her.
Beneath his thumb, the pulse in her wrist raced.
It was only the soft whimper she made as she pressed her palm against the side of his cheek that made him snap out of it.
He stilled before lifting his head to stare down at her. His eyes widened with realization.
What the fuck did I just do?
The heat that had been in Tori’s hazel eyes snuffed out as she grew more aware.
For a moment, they didn’t move, just staring at each other.
Then she blinked and shook her head. “Well, look at that. I wouldn’t have thought the stuffy law student had it in him.” Her gaze grew hard, her words even harsher. “But that’s probably how you should be kissing your girlfriend, not me.”
James blinked out of the memory, realizing he’d been so zoned out, he’d already made it around the lake once.
That night with Tori had changed everything in his life.
He’d been so ridden with guilt, he’d confessed everything to Hannah. And, of course, she’d broken up with him.
Hannah swore now that they would’ve probably broken up anyway, but who knew that for sure? And now she was engaged to his friend and former roommate, Eric.
All because of what happened with Tori.
His cell buzzed from an incoming text. He debated ignoring it, but decided to check quickly.
It was from Ryan.
So, now that I’m aware you and Tori know each other, are you still cool with me calling dibs?
Maybe not cool with the whole term “dibs.” Or the fact that his cousin was around fifteen years older than Tori. But they were both adults.
If she was or wasn’t into Ryan, she’d let him know.
The bottom line was, Tori wasn’t his problem.
He quickly typed back a reply.
Go for it.
