She didn’t have to wait long for him to answer her.

Jamie

Yes.

Rachel

Am I still invited?

Jamie

Do you really need to ask?

Feeling some of the extreme emotions settle into peace again, she took a deep breath.

Rachel

Don’t forget my costume.

Then she exhaled. In for a penny, in for a pound…

Rachel

What are you doing tonight?

Jamie

Making love to you, I hope.

Rachel

Yes, please.

She set her phone aside and checked the clock. Quitting time couldn’t come soon enough. But this time, she decided to spend the final hours being true to her heart.

Turning to her computer, she opened a new document. She began to type, letting her thoughts regarding Clancy’s and the expansion of the neighborhood flow freeform onto the page.

Sixteen

Following Jamie, Rachel smiled her apologies as people stood up from their seats so they could make their way down the aisle. When she got to her seat, she slunk down, pulling the brim of the baseball cap she’d put on down over her face. “I can’t believe I’m doing this.”

“Isn’t it great?” Jamie grinned at her. The boyish excitement lighting his face was adorable.

It almost made up for how nervous she was. She pulled the cap lower, holding her hand to cover the side of her face. “I’m going to get caught. This hat isn’t going to be enough to disguise me.”

“But you didn’t want to wear the wig I got, darling,” he said patiently.

“Because that wig was ridiculous.” It’d been platinum blond and spiky. “It made me look like I was in a punk band.”

“And so, an excellent disguise, because who would think to look for you in a punk band.” He handed her a cup. “For you.”

“Thank you.” She took the beer and sat back, looking around the stadium. It was a day game, and a lot of the seats weren’t filled yet. They were in the center—excellent seats right behind home plate. It almost felt like she was in the dugout. She could even hear the players swearing off and on. They had filthy mouths—she was kind of envious, getting to say anything you thought. “How did you get such good seats on short notice?”

He arched his brow at her.

She rolled her eyes. “Silly me.”

There was a ripple through their row. She smiled as Didier and Erik made their way down the aisle to them. They’d all come together, but Erik had wanted to look at all the food options before deciding what to get.
