Meadow
Black and white streamers hang on every wall inside the fire hall. I check the calendar in the kitchen.That’s funny, it doesn’t say it’s anyone’s birthday today.
I walk out into the main bay, surprised when I don’t see anyone there.
“Hello? Guys?” My voice echoes off the wall, an eerie stillness filling the room. “Guys?”
Then I see him.
Jenkins hops down from the front seat of one of the trucks. He saunters over to me, breath held, and a silent elation fills me as I realize what’s happening.
I slap my hands over my mouth as he gets down on one knee. “Meadow Tate, I love you. Will you marry me?”
The tears I’ve been fighting come streaming out the corners of my eyes. “Of course, honey.”
He stands up and slips a beautiful diamond ring on my finger before I throw my arms around his neck.
“I seriously can’t believe you chose to do this here,” I say through choked sobs.
He kisses my lips softly. “It seemed only fitting since it’s where we met.”
“Congratulations!” comes from around us, a dozen times.
The rest of the guys from the crew, including the chief, jump out from all corners of the room. Everyone’s rushing around, hugging me and high-fiving Jenkins and pouring glasses of champagne.
He’s retired now, but you’re never really not one of the team. It’s my time to shine on the team now.
I became a firefighter to save lives and help people, but little did I know it would be the best decision of my life in so many ways beyond that.
“I love you, Jenkins.”
He kisses me again. “I love you too, Tate.”
“Call me baby…”
He looks around and leans to my ear. “My baby.”
I shiver and I can tell tonight we’re going to heat up Scarlet Springs Mountain.
