“If you change your mind, please call.”

“I will. Thank you, Mom.”

Patricia leaned forward and kissed her cheek. “Maybe after you feel better, we can have lunch?”

Anna smiled. “I’d like that very much.”

A day and a half later, her driver pulled into her driveway at home. She took one look at it and felt tears fill her eyes. She was glad to be home. This was her sanctuary. As long as she had this, she was okay.

The gunshot had only grazed her, fortunately. So, she was coming home with a small wound that they were able to glue shut. The blood transfusion helped the most. If it weren’t for her heartache, she’d be okay.

Terry, her driver, opened the car door.

“Here you are, miss.”

“Thank you, Terry.”

“You’re most welcome.”

Jessup opened the door before she got to it.

“We’re glad you’re back, Miss Anna.”

She tried to smile. “I’m glad I’m back. Is there anything I need to take care of?”

“No, miss. Are you hungry?”

“Not right now. I’m going to shower and then go into the office.” It would be the first time she actually worked in her dad’s office since he passed away.

Jessup smiled. “I’m glad. Your father has been gone a few years. He’d want you in his chair doing what you both loved so much. I can’t believe you haven’t worked in there since he’s been gone.”

“I think I’ll feel closer to him. Before, I didn’t want to disturb anything, but I think I’m ready now.”

“Call if you need anything.”

“Thank you so much. I’m so glad I have you and the others.”

“We all feel blessed to be able to take care of you.”

She knew she was the blessed one. Even with her heart broken into a million pieces, she had her little group of people that really cared for her, a nice house to live in, and more money than she could ever spend.

Chapter Nineteen

An hour later, the phone rang in the office. She’d taken a nice long shower and put on old sweats. She sat in her father’s chair and started making a list of everything she’d lost and what she’d need right away. Fortunately, she still had a lot of clothes at the house.

“Miss, there’s a call for you,” Jessup said over the intercom.

“Thank you.” She reached for the phone. “This is Anna.”

“I thought you were going to call me?” Travis asked.

“I’m sorry. I’ve been busy.”

“Is there anything I can help with?”

“No. I’m packing,” she lied. “I’m going to take a vacation at my mom’s house in Jamaica.”

“For how long?”
