He wouldn’t tell her where the person was that might have given him up. “Travis says someone might have told them.”
“How will you know for sure?”
“Let’s get home. We’ll figure it out.” He took her hand in his. They were both quiet on the ride home. He constantly scanned the area and made sure they weren’t followed. Once he’d pulled them into the garage and closed the door, he waited until it was shut before turning the car off and disengaging the locks on the car.
When he got them inside, he turned off the security and turned it back on when the door was locked behind them. He walked around and made sure everything was locked before heading into the bathroom.
“I need to shower, sweetheart. The leg under the cast feels gross.”
“Okay, I’ll come in with you.”
She sat on the counter while he stripped and stepped into the shower. “What are we going to do?” she asked.
A few minutes later, he turned off the shower, grabbed a towel, and then wrapped it around his hips before stepping out. “I want more information before we make any move. I don’t want you leaving here unless I’m with you.”
“I wouldn’t do that without your permission.”
He walked to her, maneuvered his hips between her legs, and then cupped her face in his hands. “I know. It’s because you’re a good girl.”
She grinned. “I’d like to think so.”
He pressed his mouth against hers, lifted his head when she moaned, and tried to get closer to him.
“Before I take you to bed, I’d like to eat. You’re going to need the energy.”
She snorted. “Or maybe you’ll need it. You’re way older than me, remember?”
“Oh, you’ll pay for that.”
She squealed when he lifted her over his shoulder and walked into the bedroom. She bounced a few times before coming up on her hands and knees.
Zachary tackled and pinned her to the mattress. “So, what are you going to do now, sassy pants?”
He smiled at her as she tried to regain control. She was laughing so hard tears filled her eyes.
“You know, on second thought, food can wait.” His head dipped, and he took her lips with savage hunger. He groaned when he lifted his head to see her expression of desire that matched his own.
He heard a popping sound and didn’t know what it was until he smelled smoke.
“Fuck.” He reared up and grabbed some clothing and a gun. He called Travis.
“They’re here. The house is on fire. We’re going out the back.”
“Dammit. I’m sending in the troops.”
“Good.” He hung up and looked around.
Smoke was starting to fill the house. He grabbed her hand. “We have to go out the back. Keep your head down.”
“I will.”
He opened the back slider door and looked around. It was early evening, so the shadows were deeper. It was good because they could hide, but the enemy could use them to conceal themselves.
Zachary heard the sounds of gunshots, and then the earth around them exploded. He pushed her down, rolled on top of her, and scanned the area. They were sitting ducks if they stayed right there.
“We have to move. Run behind the bush. I’ll lift you over the wooden fence, and then I’ll follow. Don’t look back.”
“Okay.”
