Zachary got up, picked up one crutch, and made his way to the front door. It looked like he turned the lock or checked it before going around to each window as he continued to talk on the phone.

He passed by her down the hallway to a door that had been closed. She followed him, and her jaw dropped when she saw the number of computers and pieces in boxes set around the room. An old desk with a chair and a long portable table were the only pieces of furniture. Zachary sat at the desk and booted up his computer.

His fingers raced over the keys with his phone tucked between his ear and shoulder.

“Yeah, I see it. Fuck. I thought I covered my tracks.”

The voice on the other side of the call kept talking, and she picked up some of it.

“You did,”the caller said.

Her heartbeat started rapidly pounding in her chest.

“Yes. I’m on now,” Zachary said.

Anna looked over his shoulder and studied the computer screen. She could see that a security system was set around the house right away. It looked to be a pretty intense one, and she wondered why.

Whoever he talked to said it wasn’t anything to worry about until they heard something.

“Yeah, I see. I’ll talk to Anna about it.” He hung up.

The look in his eyes made her dread what he was about to say.

Chapter Thirteen

Fuck, he didn’t know if he had to worry or not, but he’d take more precautions to protect Anna. “That was Travis. He forgot to tell us about the security system they set up.”

“Why did they do that?”

“I’ve made some enemies around here. They figured out I wasn’t who I said I was, and that’s when they tried to kill me. Fortunately, it looks like they don’t know about my name or address or even if I’m still alive.”

“From what I can tell, the system looks top of the line,” she said.

“Yeah, this will be part of my job. We have to set the code, too.”

“We can do that. Hold on, and let me get your other crutch.”

He watched her leave and then wiped a hand down his face. He debated having her there with him at the moment, but it was like Travis said, they put the system in a precaution. He sighed. He wasn’t going to start to worry about it until they had more intel, but he would start keeping a gun with him at all times.

He slipped one into the back of his shorts. This wouldn’t work for long. He could already feel the fabric stretch, and the t-shirt he’d put on when he got up from a nap was barely hiding it.

“What’s going on?” Anna asked.

He faced the door where she stood. “Nothing right now. Travis says it’s just a precaution, but I’m glad he said something I should have considered already. We’re worried the bad guys will find out where I live.”

“What are the chances?” she asked.

“Slim, but I take protecting you seriously.”

“Do you have guns?”

“Yes. Do you know how to use one?”

“Yes. One of the guards at home taught me. It’s been a while, but I’m not a novice.”

“That’s good. I’ll show you where they are around here.”

She nodded.
