He took a moment to let that sink in. “What’s the damage?”
“One of your legs was broken. You’ve got cuts over most of your body.”
“My face?” Zachary asked.
“Was cut. It’s about three inches long on the left side of your face. You’ll have a scar, but it will fade with time. We had a plastic surgeon come in and do what he could. The doctor said he could make it look better, but you’d have to have another surgery.”
Kane smirked. “I guess I’m prettier than you are now.”
Zachary snorted. “You’ll never be prettier than me, fuckwad.”
The door opened, and a man in a white coat and a woman came through the door. The young woman, who Kane had called Anna, followed closely behind the other two and stood off to the side. He could see the anxiety on her face.
The nurse turned to her and scowled. “Anna, you’ve got things to do.”
The harshness of the woman’s tone pissed Zachary off, and it looked like his friends were just as angry. Before anyone could stop her, Anna fled the room.
The doctor scowled at the nurse. “We’ll talk later.”
The nurse’s mouth tightened, but she didn’t say anything.
“Hello, Mr. Stone, my name is Doctor Fredricks. We’re pleased you are finally awake. I want to check you over, if you don’t mind.”
Zachary shook his head. “No, I’d like to see everything.”
The doctor pulled back the sheet.
“Can I sit up a bit?”
“Of course.”
The nurse moved the top of the bed up a few inches. At first, he wanted to complain that it wasn’t enough, but he got dizzy just with that movement. He watched the doctor pull the sheet down to his waist.
“You’ve got contusions and wounds all over, but the majority are superficial, and they already look like they’re healing well.” Dr. Fredricks pulled the sheet up from his feet, making sure to keep his groin area covered, and that was when he saw the cast.
“I’ll want to take another X-ray of your leg to make sure it’s healing the way it should. If all looks good, you could be out of it in three weeks.”
That didn’t sound right. He’d never worn a cast for only three or four weeks, so it wasn’t a true break, or he’d been there longer than he knew. “Wait, how long have I been here?”
Everyone got quiet, and then the doctor cleared his throat. “A little over three weeks,” Dr. Fredricks said.
Zachary’s eyes widened, and he looked at his friends. They both nodded.
“Why the fuck was I asleep that long?”
“You were in a coma, Mr. Stone,” Dr. Fredricks said.
Fuck. “Any brain swelling?”
The doctor shook his head. “No, you had a slight concussion but no brain damage.”
“Then why was I out so long?” Zachary asked.
“We have no idea. We speculated that there was enough damage done to your body that you shut down to give yourself a chance to heal.”
“In other words,” Kane said. “You’re being a pussy.”
Zachary snorted, the doctor and Travis chuckled, and the nurse gasped.
