“Stay there.”
She waited until he opened her door. Her father used to be a gentleman, too, and she missed it.
Her heartbeat felt like it tripped in her chest and then accelerated at her first sight of Zachary, sitting up in bed watching the news with the blanket down around his waist, showing his wide naked chest. Oh, God, was he serious about wanting someone like her? It felt inconceivable because he was so beautiful.
Kane chuckled and nudged her farther into the room.
Chapter Eight
Zachary turned his head when he heard the door open and smiled. Damn, she was the cutest thing he’d ever seen. He held out his hand. “Come here, baby.”
She walked over to him and grabbed his hand.
“Did you sleep?” he asked.
“Yes. How are you feeling?”
“Much better. Thomas and I walked down the hallway again, and I felt stronger.”
“Are you hungry?” she asked.
“No, I’ve had another protein shake. Did you eat?”
She shook her head.
His brow puckered. “Why not?”
“I was too excited to eat.”
He grinned, and Kane laughed.
“Travis is bringing me some clothes, and the doctor has to check me out one more time before he’ll discharge me.”
“Are you sure he’ll do that?”
Kane snorted.
Zachary smiled. “Yes, baby. I’m strong enough to go home.”
He could tell she was nervous when she gnawed her lower lip.
“Come up with me.”
He helped her up on the mattress and cuddled her against his chest. She tucked her head against his shoulder like she’d been doing it for months. Anna couldn’t have been more perfect for him.
“Hey, unless you need anything, I’ll take her suitcases to your house.”
“That would be great, Kane. I can’t thank you guys enough.”
“Hey, that’s what friends are for. I’ll check in with you later.”
“Bye,” Anna said.
“Bye, honey. Take good care of Zachary.”
She nodded seriously. “Absolutely.”
The men grinned at each other, and then Kane walked out.
