My pulse flips much like the flutter of light. Stilled but warming. The single flame illuminating the room.

Princess: I told you to leave me alone.

It disintegrates. Obscuring my room in blackness once more as I release the pressure. Tucking it away, I type back a response.

Cole: Yet you still responded, princess.

My lungs squeeze when I don’t instantly see that she had opened the message. Thinking she was going back avoiding me.

Please don’t do that. I needed your smart mouth more than you know.

Minutes tick by. My jaw unclenches when I see those bubbles again.

I sigh in relief seeing her name.

Princess: You won’t leave me alone. Ever heard of boundaries?

I smirk like she can see my face.If I had given up, then I wouldn’t have gotten your reply, sweetheart.

Cole: Persistence guarantees results.

Princess: Results warrant answers. Something you won’t provide.

My phone pinging again.

Princess: So, until you do, again, leave me alone.

A brutish kind of laugh echoes off the walls of my empty room. How does Rory not seem to get it yet? I can’t andthat’sthe problem.

How could she believe I didn’t want her? She was the only one I wanted to talk to all day, every day. She had to want the same thing, or she wouldn’t be responding right now.

Cole: I think you like it.

I type out another hitting send before she has a chance to disappear on me. I was a glutton for punishment it would seem.

Cole: Know what I like?

Not waiting for an answer, I tap on her name. Hitting the call button and sitting tight.

I smirk when she answers like I knew she would because Rory needed me as much as I needed her. She could deny it, but it was true.

“Why are you calling?” That voice of hers hushed but a little breathy. I’d caught her off guard.

Answering on the third ring. No doubt wanting to after the first but not wanting to seem overly bold. Pressure falls to my ribs when she speaks again.

I still hadn’t responded, liking the sound of her voice. Plus, her snarky tone was making my dick stir.

“Cole, you have two seconds to say something or I’m hanging up the phone,” she says sterner but not any less adorable this time.

I sigh. This was all I needed,her.

Rory’s breathing grows more drawn out. Hitching in anticipation the longer I keep her waiting on the line.

“Know why you picked up, baby girl?” I say eventually.

She doesn’t answer right away, and I imagine it’s because she’s biting on that plump lower lip of hers.Mylower lip, waiting on me to answer.

I don’t make her wait too long. “You like hearing my voice as much as I like hearing yours.”
