“Names?”

“Eloise Pierce and Emilia Adler.”

I tapped my fingers impatiently on the counter while she typed something on the computer. I wondered how long it was supposed to take to find a patient.

“Jensen!” a voice called out to my left. I looked over and found Alan there. I was about to make my way over to him when another voice called my name to my right.

“Mr. Pierce.”

Warren stood to my right, his face expressionless. I could see Alan’s frown forming a bit as he looked between me and the other man.

I took a deep breath and quickly gained my control. I turned to Warren first.

“Did you call Jace?” I asked.

He nodded, his face solemn. “Mr. Reed is on his way here with his wife.”

“Good. How is she?”

“Still in surgery.”

My heart pounded harshly in my chest at the words. She would be fine. She had to be, because the alternative was unacceptable to me. I turned to my cousin, working hard to keep my composure.

“My mom?”

“In surgery,” he answered. Something flashed in his eyes that made me pause, but before I could question him, it was gone. “We’re just waiting now.”

I didn’t know what to say to that. I was an action man, but for the first time in my life, I felt helpless. There was nothing I could do but wait.

* * *

We wereall gathered around the waiting area.

Jace and Evelyn had shown up some time ago, while Elliot, Jace and Evelyn’s son, stayed with Jerry, his bodyguard.

They never got around hiring a new nanny for Elliot after Jace and Evelyn got together.

Jace and Evelyn’s story was a complicated one, and it had made me feel like the worst kind of human after Jace had brought me back to his house to Evelyn a few months into her job as Elliot’s nanny.

Especially because I knew more about her history with Jace and Elliot than she did at the time, and I knew since that first meeting that Evelyn had fallen in love with Jace while he was keeping secrets from her, under the guise of protecting Elliot.

But Elliot didn’t need protection from Evelyn.

Especially from Evelyn, considering she loved that little boy more than anything and anyone in this world.

Right now, Evelyn was sitting close to Jace, her head buried in his chest, while he wrapped a protective arm around her.

He met my eyes across the room, and I couldn’t tell what he was thinking just now.

I looked away from him.

I always wondered how much Jace suspected of my feelings for Emilia.

I never said anything, but I never made any effort to hide it either.

I was fucking fascinated with her at first sight in that London bar six years ago.

I was obsessed now that she was here, in my city, and just barely out of reach.
