I looked back out the open office door. The entire floor was quiet. Everyone aside from the custodian staff had gone home, including Jace, who, before marrying Evelyn, had been an even bigger workaholic than I was.
Now he had a family to go home to, and I didn’t blame him for wanting to get out of here as soon as possible.
My phone ringing on my desk brought me out of my reverie.
Alan’s name flashed across the screen and I picked it up, holding the phone to my ear as I looked back at the now-dark screen of my computer.
“Hey, what’s up?”
“Jensen.”
I sat up at the sound of my name in that tone. Something was wrong. I knew it, even before he could say anything else.
“It’s Aunt Eloise. You need to come to Rose Valley General Hospital. Do you know where that is?”
I nodded, even if he couldn’t see me. “I’ll be there.”
I hung up before I even realized I never asked him what was wrong with my mom. My mind was running a million miles an hour, and I didn’t think I was capable of rational thought. Quickly, I shut off my computer and grabbed my shit.
My phone rang again just as I locked up my office door.
Cursing softly, I picked up the phone without looking to see who had called. “Yeah?”
“Mr. Pierce. This is Warren Pike.”
“Yeah?” I asked, somewhat impatiently. Warren Pike was the man I put on Emilia for her protection and for my fucking sanity.
“It’s Miss Adler. There has been an accident.”
“What?”
What the fuck was going on tonight?
“What kind of accident?”
“A car…”
I didn’t hear any more. Fear held my heart still as all the blood rushing in my ear drowned his voice out.
“... Rose Valley General Hospital.”
I only heard the tail end of the conversation. I blindly moved to the elevator.
I didn’t remember the car ride to the hospital. I didn’t even know how I got to the front desk, which was manned by three haggard and tired-looking nurses. Two of them looked up at me with dispassionate eyes, while the other one stayed focused on her computer.
I wondered how many anxious-looking family members they’d had to deal with tonight.
“Can I help you?” the one closest to me asked.
I opened my mouth before I closed it, frustration tearing at my heart a bit. Who the fuck did I ask to see first?
“I have two people here,” I said finally.
“Were they both in an accident?”
I shook my head. “No, they came here separately.”
The nurse raised an eyebrow at that. Just a fucking coincidence.
