Aurora was right. Unless he did something about it, he would be cursed to be eaten alive. The pain already felt like he might die. Could she be serious about dying from a broken heart?

He didn’t sense any lies from her, but he had the feeling she hadn’t told him the whole truth either.

That night, he stepped into the great lodge building joining Helen and Hank. It was dark inside, save for the dim green glow shimmering above. Aurora held her hands up, creating the bizarre light.

Helen nudged him. “Amazing, isn’t it? The power of the Northern Lights. She captured it and brought it inside.”

“Unbelievable,” he mumbled, awed by the strange sight.

A man who had been seated on one of the council seats stood. “Helen and Hank. Step forward.”

Aurora swept her hands and brought the shimmering light down, enveloping the couple in the magic glow.

“It’s amazing! I feel completely recharged,” Helen said.

“It’s like I’m twenty years younger!” Hank added.

Adam watched as they shifted into polar bears. That was all he needed to witness. Aurora’s power was real. It wasn’t just some mumbo jumbo bullshit. She was the real fucking deal.

He made up his mind that he would take her up on her offer.

“Aurora, I’ve made my decision.”

“Step forward, let the power of the Northern Lights fill you!” she replied.

Without hesitation, he walked forward just as Aurora began chanting.

One step away from the circling light, a sudden pain shot through his chest. His heart pounded, and he doubled over.

Something was not right.

Then he heard her screams in his head, “Please! Help! Adam!”

“My mate!” he growled. Joy was in danger. Nothing, not even a sorceress with the power of the Northern Lights in her hands, would stop him.

Forcing himself to his feet, he spun on his heels and lumbered toward the door.
