And I’m crushed.
“Well, so much for a great job with a nice boss,” I say to myself as I settle into my chair and stare out the window at the front lawn, which is what I end up doing for basically the rest of the day, aside from answering the phone twice and saying hi to two men who came in and showed me their IDs.
“So it was boring?”Mel asks me when I get home.
“Boring?” I sigh, exasperated. “More like mind-numbingly, soul-crushingly boring. Not to mention it wasn’t even the job I applied for in the first place!”
“Want me to kick his ass? I can kick his ass if you want me to.”
Mel flashes me a very serious look that actually gets me to laugh. I can always count on her to cheer me up when I’ve had a bad day. That’s she’s my best friend and has been since elementary school. She was there when my dad left, and I still consider her even more reliable than my mom when I really need someone to talk to.
“Yes, please do,” I laugh. “Smash that ridiculously hot face of his in with a baseball bat, please.”
“He’s that hot?”
“Um, yes.” I nod. “He’s tall, obviously works out or is just blessed with god-like genetics, and has a face that should be on billboards advertising products.”
“Of course he is,” she sighs.
“But he also completely killed my plans for my gap year and didn’t even pretend to listen to me when I tried to talk to him about it.”
Mel shakes her head and pops the top off the champagne bottle.
“Hot guys are always the biggest dicks.” She pours us both glasses and frowns. “Always have the biggest dicks too, which is why they think they can get away with being the biggest dicks.”
