Then it was all Sonia could do to hold on tight and ride the cresting wave of euphoria, the sharp peak of ecstasy.
Renzo’s mouth broke from hers as he hauled in air, then with a fierce burst of words she hadn’t a hope of understanding, lost himself. The power of him, the aching beauty of him struggling on that overwhelming tide, dragged at something deep within Sonia.
When it was over she wrapped herself around him as if to protect him from forces bigger than either of them.
He groaned and his eyes slitted open.
‘You’ll kill me, cara, I just know it.’ His words were gravel and treacle, warming her in ways that had nothing to do with their still-joined bodies.
Then, holding her close, he rolled onto his back so she lay splayed over his searing hot frame. Sonia felt the double-quick beat of his heart beneath her face, the tremors running the length of him, and couldn’t imagine anywhere else in the world she’d rather be.
Renzo lifted a hand to brush the hair back over her shoulder. His fingers were as unsteady as her jittering pulse. Proof that in this at least they were equals.
‘But what a way to go,’ she murmured. Her mouth curved tiredly into what felt like her first genuine smile in months.
