“Besides, who doesn’t want a present?” he continues.

“I don’t,” I say.

“Why not?”

“I can get by myself.”

“Why bother? You have me on your side.”

“I’m fine being alone. Seriously. I don’t need anyone.”

He reaches for me, and I take a step back. His expression darkens, and I can tell he has darkness inside him.

Even more than Brett, Liam reminds me of my father.

I want nothing to do with him at all.

“Liam, I want to go to class.”

“I want to take you out tonight. It’s time you settle in. I’ll show you around town, all the hopping places, and—”

“I really don’t need you to.”

“You don’t seem to understand what I’m offering you.” He reaches inside his pocket and removes a jewelry box. “In here is a little token of my affection.”

“Liam, you don’t even know me.”

“I want to get to know you.” He leers at me. “I want to get to know all of you.”

Liam leans down. I tense, ready to deck him if he goes to kiss me, but he just puts his nose against the side of my neck and inhales.

He’s smelling me.

What the fuck?

“I want to make all of your dreams come true.”

“Sorry. You can’t help me there,” I say coolly, jerking my arm free. “I don’t have any dreams.”

"I can help you think up some. How about you dream about me takin' you to prom?"

“Oh, I’m not going to prom.”

"Why not? Worried about money? I can buy you a dress. What are your measurements?"

“None of your business.”

“I can understand that. Your waist is so small, but your—”

“My what?” I snap.

“Your top,” he says with a smirk.

Well, I guess he could've used a worse term.

"But we don't have to worry about prom. That's not for another, what, month or two, but dinner tomorrow. How does that sound? I can pick you up—"

“I don’t think so.”
