“No?” He sits right beside me, but he twists his entire body to look at me dead-on. “I know you’re intelligent. You’re deep and thoughtful.”

I roll my eyes. “Ty—”

“I don’t let anyone call me that, but when you do, I don’t mind. Not too much anyway.” He chuckles. “You’re an amazing woman, Erika.”

“You really don’t know me at all.”

“So you have secrets you aren’t willing to share yet. Maybe one day, you will open up to me.”

“What about you? Will you open up to me?”

“I already have more than anyone else,” he says hoarsely.

My heart leaps in my chest. Oh, Tyler. I’m sure the Mutineers have to know some of it, but maybe they don’t know the full extent of it.

“Tyler…”

“Yeah, Erika?”

“Maybe one day.”

He grins. “I’d love to hear your entire life story.”

“I was born on a cold, rainy morning on April fourth…”

“Seriously?”

“Yes, actually. A Friday.”

“At twelve at night?”

“No, and I don’t think a striking clock made me cry.”

We both laugh.

“I never did read all of David Copperfield,” I admit.

"No. You relied on Cliffs Notes?" He shakes his head. "I'm disappointed in you, Erika."

“I’m more disappointed in the teacher who assigned it.”

We laugh some more, and I swear Mr. Winters curses us under his breath.
