CHAPTER27

It'sa bit harder of a day. Some of the customers are more challenging. I know I got one woman's order exactly right, but after eating half of it, she complained and said I got it wrong and wanted a new platter. Holly wasn't pleased about that, and she didn't give me a cupcake at the end of my shift, not that I assumed I would always get one.

Still, I’m happy enough once I leave. Robyn let me borrow her car again, and as I’m heading back to campus, I call Allie on Bluetooth.

“Hey, Katie, what’s up?”

“I have good news! I can make the first payment for the bike in two weeks.”

“Really? That’s perfect timing because I think I should have the bike all fixed up right about then.”

“Oh, that’s awesome! But, ah…”

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” I say. Sure, I still have to learn how to ride a motorcycle and get a license and all that, and to do that in two weeks will be kinda crazy, but I can be highly motivated when I’m determined to have something. “Everything’s great. Moving right along. Hey, would you want to meet up for dinner? We can eat on campus.”

“Or we can eat out to celebrate your new job. I take it you’re a waitress?”

“Yes. I still want the job at the club, though, and my friend Robyn the one I told you about? She’s interested in bartending, if you can still manage one non-member gig.”

“Yeah, let’s talk over dinner. What do you like to eat?”

“Anything and everything.”

“It’s a celebration. My treat.”

“Then Burger King.”

“Girl! Burger King is not a celebration!”

“The Ch’King begs to differ.”

She laughs. “Is that what you really want, or are you just trying to keep the cost down?”

“Both?”

Allie laughs even harder. "At least you're honest. Fine. Burger King. When?"

“Are you hungry now? I know it’s a little early.”

It's a little after four. My shift today was six to four. Before dinner but still tiring.

“Hungry and tired from working? Did you work today?”

“Twenty-two hours between yesterday and today.”

“Are you going to be able to take on hours for the club?”

“Yes.”

“And still have time for the guys?” she adds slyly.

"I'll see you at Burger King once you get there." I hang up as she laughs some more.

Fifteen minutes later, we’re sitting at a table in Burger King with our obnoxiously huge Cokes, the massive chicken sandwiches, and fries.
