“I never intended for any of this.”

“Erika! Stop!”

“Stop what?”

“I’m so very happy for you,” I reassure her. “We can’t be roommates. Life happens. People grow apart—”

“No,” she says firmly. “We aren’t going to grow apart. That’s not allowed.”

I laugh. “Because whatever you say goes, huh? Is that how it works when you have four cocks to tame?”

“Katie! It sounds like you’re outside. Will you stop—”

“You don’t have to be so freaked out. No one here knows about you and won’t care that you have a delicious harem.”

Erika giggles. “I really want you to come visit and meet them.”

“I’m just curious,” I say, “and this is a serious question. You can’t marry them all.”

“Not legally, no, but that doesn’t matter.”

“Ah, yes, just the love in your heart.”

“Yes!” she protests. “I hope you find a guy.”

“Yeah. One.” I snort. “Because I don’t think I could handle four.”

“The right two or three or four…”

“How about just one?” I suggest.

Unbidden, I think about Rob. Ugh. Maybe I’m not cut out for one-night stands, or maybe it’s just because of how utterly delicious it had been.

Fuck. What if that’s as good as it gets and no other guy I’m with for the rest of my life is as good a lover as Rob? I’ll be fucked because there’s no way I’ll stop comparing guys to him if that’s the case.

Shit. My mom has always claimed she never slept with another guy other than my father, and while I don’t know if I can believe her or not, maybe there’s something to only having one partner ever. At the very least, you wouldn’t be tempted to compare your new lover to an old one in that case.

Not that Rob had been a lover, but he sure has been loving my body in all the right ways that night…

“Katie? Are you still there?”

“Yeah, sorry.”

“You weren’t listening to me,” Erika accuses.

“No,” I admit. “I’m sorry. Can you repeat that?”

“What’s going on, Katie. Talk to me. Please.”

“It’s just a little terrifying.”

“Terrifying?” Erika sounds alarmed. “What’s terrifying?”

“Maybe terrifying is the wrong word,” I mutter. “I’ve been dealing with some stuff. That’s all.”

“Already? Like what?”

“My roommate. We didn’t get off on the right foot.”
