Chapter 22
How do you make a waterbed more bouncy? Add Spring Water. ~ Text from Barney to Hailey
Aiden rubs his hand up and down my thigh as he drives. Each time he reaches the edge of my dress, his fingers toy with the hem before moving back up my thigh. My female bits are going into overdrive telling me to jump him, jump him now. I reach over and rub my palm against his hard length. He jumps and the vehicle jerks to the right.
“Don’t play with fire,” he hisses.
“What if I like the heat?”
“You’re trouble,” he responds with a shake of his head.
“You’re the one who promised to do dirty, dirty things to me.” I shiver. I want to do all the dirty things with him.
He yanks his hand away from my thigh. “What’s wrong? I was only teasing.”
“I think we’re being followed.”
“What?” I undo my seatbelt and spin around. I kneel on the seat and search the cars behind us. “Which car is it? How do you know?”
He grabs my elbow and tries to force me back in my seat. “Sit down and buckle up. This could be dangerous.”
Damn. He’s right. Bummer. I turn around and sit in my seat like a good girl. “Can you at least tell me how you know someone’s following us?”
“This is not a joke, Hailey.”
“I know. It’s a teaching moment.”
His jaw clenches. “I’m not going to explain to you how you can tell if someone is tailing you.”
“Fine.” I shrug. “I’ll ask the uncles. They’ve taught me everything I know.”
He grunts, which I interpret to mean whatever, before turning left.
“Where are you going? My house is the other way.”
“I’m not leading whoever it is to your house.”
Oh, good thinking. “Are they still following us?”
He nods as his eyes continue to scan the rearview and side mirrors.
“Where are we going?”
“I’ll drop you off at the station and see if I can catch this fucker.”
“I’m going to miss all the fun,” I pout.
“You’re going to be safe, which is the only thing that matters.”
I want to scream and shout at him that I can handle myself and keep myself safe, but it’s impossible to rile myself up enough to start screaming when he says things like I’m the only thing that matters.
He grabs his phone and dials. “I’m coming in hot.” I don’t listen as he continues his conversation. Instead, I strain my eyes in the side mirror trying to figure out who’s following us. All I see are a bunch of headlights. They all look the same to me. I seriously do need to talk to the uncles about how to figure out if I have a tail.
“Okay,” Aiden says and pulls my attention away from the headlights. “I’m going to stop in front of the station. An officer will meet you. Stay with him until I can get back to you.”
I nod and turn away to look outside so he doesn’t see me roll my eyes. What am I a child?
“I need the words.”
