“I understand.” And I do. I would be freaking out if my husband was murdered and the police thought I did it. I can’t even imagine. “But I am seriously not qualified. You need to find someone who is.”

“But all the investigators I’ve interviewed were men convinced I’m some type of black widow because Phillip was older than me.”

Aha. Now, I know why she’s intent on hiring me. She assumes I’ll be on her side because I’m a woman. “There must be another female PI you can hire.” I know the field is dominated by men, but there are other female PIs besides me.

“But they didn’t come recommended like you.”

“Okay. How about this? I know a detective. I’ll ask him if he can recommend a PI.”

She smiles. “Thank you.”

“I have conditions.” I wait for her nod before continuing. “You will stop pushing me to take your case and hire whoever he recommends.”

“If it’s a woman.”

“No.” I shake my head. “Whoever it is.”

She takes a deep breath and holds it for a few seconds before agreeing. “Okay.”

“Good. Now take this picture, I need to get going. I’m running late.”

I call Aiden on my way to the hotel, but he doesn’t pick up. I don’t leave a message. I’ll be seeing him tonight anyway for our double date. My lip curls. I am not looking forward to the double date with an ex who has her eye on my man. Whoa. Hold on. Where did those words my man come from? Aiden is not my man. We’ve gone out on like two dates, one of which wasn’t really a date. But you’ve liked him forever some little voice in my head reminds me. I ignore the little voice. It’s the same voice that tells me it’s okay to have another shot of tequila. Obviously, my little voice is decision-impaired.
