Not wanting to get into another argument, he dropped a kiss on her nose. “Get some sleep, sweetheart. I’ll see you in the morning.”

“Don’t be late. I have a full day and can’t wait around for you.”

Kinga rubbed her forehead with her fingertips in a gesture Griff was coming to realize displayed her anxiety. He sent her what he hoped was a reassuring smile. “Relax, Kinga, it’s all good.”

Kinga’s huge eyes flew up to collide with his. Color receded from her face and she seemed to shrink in on herself. “Don’t say that!”

It’s all good?

Why on earth would she object to that? But it was obvious the phrase disturbed her because he heard the pain in her voice, saw it in her eyes.

“I’m sorry?”

Kinga waved his apology away and stood up, wrapping her arms around her waist. “Ignore me, I’m just tired and it’s been a very long day.”

Yeah, he didn’t buy that for a second. Knowing he couldn’t push her, Griff started to walk away. He took two steps before stopping. After a short, internal debate around whether to vocalize his thoughts, he spoke. “I know you don’t trust me, Kinga, but I won’t let you down, I promise.”

She didn’t know it, but he seldom made promises, and the ones he did make, he always kept.

When he pulled back to look at her, her eyes reflected her skepticism and Griff realized it was going to take more than a sentence or two to get her to believe him.

And he was shocked at how much he wanted her to have faith in him.
