“Fine,” I hiss, releasing her legs, twisting away from her and slamming the door.

I jog around the driver’s side fast. She might have told me she won’t bolt, but I’m not entirely sure I believe her.

“I’m just trying to do the right thing here, Kat.”

“I said—”

“Yeah, that you’re not interested. I got that loud and fucking clear. But that doesn’t change the fact that you’re wrong.”

Reaching forward, Kat twists the dial for the radio that’s down so low I can barely hear it until whatever song is playing blasts through the speakers, drowning out whatever I might have to say next.

“Now who’s being childish?” I shout.

She glances over at me, a scowl firmly in place. And I swear, if looks could kill, I’d be six feet under right now.

KAT

Stygian Johnson is the most infuriating man I’ve ever met.

My body trembles with anger as he gives me a ride home, the air thick around us.

“Kat,” his voice softens. “Don’t shut me out.”

“Whatever Styx,” I murmur, not meeting his heavy stare.

Maybe I am being a brat but he hurt me.

He hurt me so damn much.

“Kitty Kat, don’t be like this. You know I’m just trying to do the right thing here…”

Slowly, I lift my eyes to his. “The right thing for who?”

He blows out an exasperated breath, focusing on the road ahead again but I don’t miss the way his fingers clutch the wheel.

He’s pissed.

Well, that makes two of us.

Relief sinks into me as my house comes into view. The sooner I can get out of his car, the better. It’s not a good idea for us to be around each other.

When he pulls the car over, I practically spring into action, shouldering the door.

“Kat, just fucking wait a minute, yeah?”

“Why? We have nothing to say—”

“Will you stop being such a brat for a fucking second.” His eyes narrow as he drags a hand over his stubbled jaw. “I’m sorry, okay? The last thing I ever wanted was to hurt you. But shit’s complicated. D said your mom—”

“My mom, seriously?” I balk. “You’re going to use my mom as an excuse for the way you dropped me like I was nothing… like what we shared meant nothing.”

“Kat, I—”

“No, Styx. You made your choice.” I slide out of his car and glance back, shaking my head. “And it wasn’t me.”

Slamming the door, I haul ass up the path to my house. I half expect Styx to give chase since he seemed so insistent on giving me a ride home. But he doesn’t.
