LACHLAN

Miranda had done a stellar job with the Artefactory.

A colorful crowd milled about, chatting and pointing at the eclectic art, which was bold and brash. If I hadn’t been so short of cash, I would have loved to purchase a piece or two.

Miranda sparkled in a green dress that hugged her curves, just as my body craved to do. Her long, wavy hair bounced teasingly over her breasts as she glided about. Sipping on champagne, I observed her moving from one group to another, chatting while moving her hands expressively.

I knew then that she would do well.

Harriet came up to me. “Hey. Good to see you back.”

“I couldn’t stay away.”

“I so hope you’re not going to break Andie’s heart again. She’s been pretty low this past week.”

I studied her. The sisters were like day and night when it came to socializing.

“My life’s complicated,” I said. “I’m here, though.” I returned my attention to Miranda and noticed her business partner sticking close by. I cocked my head toward them. “He’s a bit too fucking friendly.”

“Ethan. He’s got the hots for her,” she said.

“I’d better go and claim her, then,” I said, playing the possessive boyfriend role for the first time.

“Before you go, have you seen Orlando lately?”

I scratched my prickly jaw. “No. He doesn’t wish to see anyone.”

Her face pinched. “That’s such tragic news.”

“Did you visit him?” I asked.

“No. One better. I’m working there.”

I studied her. “So have you seen him?”

“Not yet. But I’m on his ward. I’m going to make sure he walks again. He’s going to be my project.”

“He’s young. There’s hope.”

“That’s what I think. He’s just got to get this to work for him.” She tapped her head. “The power of belief is everything.”

“True.” I thought of Ollie’s depression and dark moods. I’d never seen that side of him before.

“It’s nice that you’ve taken a deep interest.” I smiled tightly. “I’m just not sure if he’s ready for a girlfriend.”

“I’m not doing it for that,” she replied defensively. “I’m too old for him, anyway.” She looked away. “I’m off to get a drink. Nice to see you.”

I wanted to say, “Nonsense,” but I had no idea what Ollie thought of Harriet.

Noticing Ethan’s shoulder rubbing against Miranda’s, I headed over to see her.

“Miranda’s the brains behind all of this,” he said, pointing at an artfully arranged display of eye-catching figurines and sculptures.

Miranda’s unassuming smile made me proud. I loved her humility.

She turned and saw me for the first time. “Lachlan, you made it.”
