Zoe must have realized she’d pushed too hard. “Maybe you’re right,” she said. “Maybe we have to get reacquainted. It’s been almost fourteen years since I last saw you. I’ve changed a lot in that time. You have, too.”

“That’s right,” Ethan said quickly. “We’re both adults now. Capable of doing adult things.”

“Yes,” Zoe said, her voice steady, even though it sounded as if Davies was talking about sex. “We are. But we’re not doing that tonight. I don’t care what you want. I’m not prepared for that, and neither are you.”

“I’ve been ready for it since high school,” Ethan said. “And I came prepared.” There was a pause, then a slight crinkle.

Spence heard Zoe’s tiny inhalation. “You need more than condoms for a relationship,” she finally said. “You need trust. Understanding. You need to know the other person.”

“I know all I need to know about you, Zoe.”

Spence didn’t like the way this was going. He’d intended to wait for the police to arrive, but now he wasn’t sure if he could. What if Davies decided he wanted Zoe right now?

Spence glanced up the road. No lights. No evidence of the police yet. He’d have to take this into his own hands.

He glanced around. Did he want Davies coming out of the front door or the back door?

Definitely the front. It would be safer that way. He’d run toward the road instead of the cliffs behind the house.

So he went to the rear door. Used his fist to pound on the wood. “Ethan Davies! This house is surrounded by law enforcement officers. Come out with your hands up!”
