The lawyer looked over to Christopher.

“I’ll ask, but my client has already made it clear to me on the phone that he would rather not answer questions.”

“Why not?” Paige asked. “What is he afraid of?”

The lawyer answered after a moment or two.

“My client has been hounded unfairly by both the press and the police. He has seen his life torn apart by vile, false allegations. Now, you are leveling more allegations at him without any real proof beyond some vague suspicions. If you don’t understand why he might not want to cooperate with you, Agent, then you are far too naïve to be doing your job.”

Paige looked over to Christopher, and then to the door. He nodded, and the two of them stepped back to let the lawyer talk to her client. The two of them headed to where Detective Sanchez was waiting.

“This isn’t looking good,” Sanchez said. “The lawyer’s right. Without physical evidence, you don’t have anything. All he has to do is keep silent, and even if it’s suspicious as hell, you can’t hold him forever.”

“I’ll get something out of him,” Christopher promised.

Paige hoped so, because otherwise, there was a real risk that a murderer might walk free.
