Her eyes widened very slightly at that. “That seems pretty ambitious.”

“And yet I feel as though I’ve succeeded,” he said, turning up the charm. “I’m Martin.”

It was a fake name, but names inspired confidence and trust. He had a whole stock of them.

“Sienna,” the young woman replied, and it wasn’t a fake name. He knew that. “I like your mask. Although I find myself wondering about the face underneath it.”

“Well, half of the fun of costumes is getting to remove them,” he said. He gave Sienna a pointed look, one that said to her how much he was thinking about all the fun the two of them could have.

He was, just not in the way she was probably thinking about right then.

“I guess a magician like you could just make this one disappear,” Sienna said, with a wink.

He laughed deliberately, looking her up and down. “I could certainly try.”

He performed another quick coin trick, making one spin and then disappear.

“You’re good with your hands,” Sienna said.

“Very. Tell me, Sienna, do you know how a magician makes a beautiful woman disappear from the middle of a party?”

“I don’t know,” Sienna said. “How does a magician make a woman disappear from a party?”

He held out a hand and leaned close. “By suggesting that we could both have a lot more fun elsewhere.”

She only hesitated for a moment, and he had the feeling that even that was for effect, not wanting to make this too easy for him. Then she took his hand.

“Sounds good to me.”

He smiled as he led her from the party. He had his assistant for his next performance. Now to make it a great one.
