“I’d have to go back through my notes to try to find them,” Paige said. “We had a lot of sessions. I transcribed them for my thesis. I might be able to find something in there.”

Christopher looked suddenly intent. “Then start looking. If it can give us anything that we need, then it will be worth it.”

“What do you need?” Paige asked. It seemed better than trying to guess at things until she hit on what the FBI agent needed to hear. “The more of an idea you can give me of what you want, the better.”

She saw Christopher pause to think for a moment or two. “The goal right now is to work out where he might go to next. Understanding him better will help with that, but right now, it’s about finding places that he might go. Possible targets, possible places he might want to lay low, anything like that.”

Paige could do that, or at least, she hoped that she could. It felt strange opening up her laptop in the middle of a crime scene to get at her files, but she did it, tapping away at it as she tried to isolate the right parts of her notes.

The problem was that there were so many of them. She’d had months and months of sessions with Adam, and after the first couple, he’d talked a lot. Paige found herself wondering if she could use word searches through her notes or through the transcripts of the sessions to find what she was looking for; yet even for that, she would need to have an idea of what she was trying to find.

Paige wracked her memory, trying to think of what she needed. She put her fingers to her temples as she tried to concentrate. A flash of memory came to her, and she started to work through her notes, searching for the one section of them that she needed.

“You’ve thought of something, haven’t you?” Christopher said. He sounded suddenly hopeful.

Paige nodded. “Adam talked about a place in his sessions where he used to stay. A place that not even the police knew about. He boasted about how carefully he’d hidden it, putting the property in a false name. For a long time, he wouldn’t tell me that name. He made me work for it. I had to pretend that I didn’t believe him, but eventually, he just had to show off how clever he’d been. He told me, so that I could look it up and see just how expertly he’d arranged things.”

“So you looked it up?” Christopher said. “You have an address for a possible safe house for this killer?”

Paige nodded. She did, and if they were lucky, her notes might mean that they were able to catch Adam Riker before he was able to kill again.

“All right,” Christopher said. “Give me the address. You can wait here and-”

“I want to come with you,” Paige said. The words were out of her mouth before she could stop herself. “I need to be a part of this. After all…,” she gestured to the crime scene. “I need to be there for it.”

Christopher looked as if he was going to argue, but he nodded, instead. “All right. But if we’re going, we have to go now.”
