“But what if you don’t say yes?” She looked into his eyes.

“I was going to ask you at Christmas before I messed up. So, I would probably say yes.” His hand slid up her arms and into her short blond hair.

“But we can’t ruin their engagement.” She slid her hands up his chest.

“We’ll keep it a secret for a few months.”

“But you hate keeping things a secret. Hence the breakup.”

“I can spend time just enjoying you and our little secret. I have matured over the last few months. And your son has my name, so you’re not going anywhere.” He kissed her.

“I am so in love with the new you. Of course, I loved the old one too.” She laughed.

“Nordskov.” He pulled her closer to him. “I don’t even remember not loving you.”

“I like that.” She kissed him.

“Mandy, I have something to say. The last day in the hospital, when I talked to David, it was because he wanted to tell me why I can’t have kids. We had done some tests a few weeks before, and he had the results. Since Krystal wouldn’t tell me why, I wanted to know.” His hands ran down her side over her warm skin and held her hips.

“What did he say?”

“That my ex-wife lied to me. It was her, not me. So, we have to use protection now. I’m sorry, I—” Her words drained out anything he was going to say.

“You have known a week and didn’t tell me?”

“Actually, I talked to Krystal on Sunday. Her answers confirmed that she had lied to me. Until then, I really didn’t believe David.”

Amanda pulled away and looked at him. “You knew, and you didn’t tell me?”

“I am telling you now,” he said, wishing he had just told her when he found out. Finally, he saw how easy it was to fall into an Amanda spiral.

Amanda groaned. “Now doesn’t help me. Now?”

“What are you talking about?” he asked in confusion.

Instead of answering, she leaned into him and hugged him close to her, her face buried into his neck before she said, “How about this morning, when I was freaking out because I’m pregnant, and you can’t have kids? How about then? When I thought you would leave and accuse me of cheating on you and hating me forever.”

“Wait, you’re pregnant again?” He cupped her face so that she was looking at him.

“Yes. I guess David should have told you earlier. Would have been good to know, you know, earlier.” She bit her lip to stop the smile. He wasn’t mad.

“How are you feeling? Are you nervous? Scared?”

“A little queasy in the mornings. A little nervous, but David thinks it was stress-related. And I’m making an appointment to see him ASAP, which is going to be awkward. But we can’t take chances with baby Strong.” She touched her stomach.

“Do we have to keep this one a secret?”

“No, this time, we tell the world. Just keep shush about us getting married.” She put a finger to his mouth. He bit at it.

Across the room the baby made a noise, causing them both to look over at the crib. “Look Nordskov, you woke the baby.”

“I did not. You’re the one with the loud voice.”

“You’re the one with the adorably loud laugh.”

“Don’t blame me. I am innocent here.”

“You are never innocent, Mandy,” he whispered
