He didn’t seem to register what I said, he just kept staring at me. “How did they know—is what I’m wondering?”
I stared at him. “How did they know? Know what?”
Chapter Six
TUCKER
I didn’t answer her. How did they know how to find a girl who made my heart pound, how could they know that this woman had all the assets I’d secretly yearned for in a woman? I sure as hell never knew exactly what my type was myself even, because I’d yet to find her. This girl though—it became hard just to touch her without wanting to touch her everywhere. Her scent drove me crazy, I loved to just stare at her lips, and I’d been rock hard from the very moment I met her. I released her wrists and took a huge step back.
“What?” she asked. “Don’t tell me, you think I’m actually a paid—a paid…?”
I shook my head. “I don’t know what to believe.”
She crossed her arms over her robed chest and her expression looked infuriated. “Well, I could care less, Mr. Midland! I was paid to deliver a message, not to be a geisha girl for some freaked out fantasy you might have!”
“Oh, so all of the sudden you know who I am?” I felt disappointed. Since the time I met this girl, she really didn’t seem to be aware that I was one of the 5 richest men in the world. For some odd reason, I didn’t want her to know either.
She dropped her arms. “Well duh. He called you that…like five times!”
I relaxed a little. “But you still don’t really know who I am?”
She shrugged. “What? You’re somebody famous or something? No—don’t tell me. You’re a secret agent and you’re working undercover and you’re after the bad guys who want this microchip that could kill thousands of people!”
I laughed outright. “Yeah, that’s who I am.”
She narrowed her eyes at me. “None of this is funny.”
“No, no it’s not. But for now, why don’t we sit down and try to figure this out?” Inexplicably, I just wanted to know this Macy girl. Yeah, my life was in danger and I’d lost my back up, but I didn’t care just now. I wondered where she came from and mostly, wanted to see if she was for real.
Standing very still, she gave me a long, hard look and then reluctantly stepped over to sit down on the luxurious couch.
I again, looked around. Spotting the fridge, I walked over and opened it up. It was loaded with food and drink. “Wow. Well, would you like some wine?”
No answer came from the couch.
“I mean there’s red and white…” I turned my head and stared at the couch. Empty. I looked over, toward the far side of the trailer to see her at the metal door, she screamed as it swung out over the rushing asphalt with her hanging on for dear life.
Chapter Seven
MACY
I couldn’t stop screaming. Why did I think I could get out of this? My grip on the door was loosening and the looming asphalt sped by beneath me. My hair whipped in my face and my robe seemed to be caught somehow in the door. Oh, God, now I’m gonna die!
Steel like hands grabbed my arms and I peered up to see Tucker.
He tugged me higher, but my robe was keeping him from getting me back into the trailer. He groaned at the sight of my robe trapping me to the doorframe. While holding me with one hand, he ripped the robe from my body with the other. The robe went flying off into the rush of the freeway.
The hot air from the road hit my skin while I felt dizzy as he tugged my body up and slammed the metal door shut. We both collapsed to the metal flooring while gasping for air.
“What—in the—hell did you think you were doing?” he asked.
I couldn’t even answer as I panted for air and fought with the adrenaline caused by my near death experience as it coursed through me.
He stood up and brought me with him.
“I—I…” I couldn’t seem talk coherently yet. “I—panicked?”
Tucker’s outraged expression seemed to change as he glanced down at my now bare body.
I dropped my eyes down, following his stare. “Oh…” I gulped heavily. When I peered back up at him, he wore a huge grin. “Now, just wait a damn min—”
He burst out laughing.
I certainly hadn’t expected this reaction and I pouted. “It’s not funny!”
He tilted his dark head back and kept on laughing.
“I mean it!” A hesitant smile broke out on my lips and I felt a sudden relief that the tacky pink robe was all I lost just now. “Dammit, I always lose everything!” I surprisingly, found myself joining his laughter.
Completely amused, Tucker struggled through his laughter as he tried to speak, “I mean, we had to throw—away our only—clothes…” He was swiping at tears of hilarity. “You fought like crazy just to—to keep a tiny bit of stupid lace! Now?” His laughter slowed as he focused on my face. “I have the only robe.” His laughter then totally faded away as our eyes locked. “It seems you were meant to be naked while you’re with me…”
