“You are now, and I shall be grateful for you every day.” He gave a satisfied nod. “Never you doubt it.”

Then he stood, crossed to the door, opened it, and yelled, “Clark, get the coach! I need to see the bishop!”

She jumped at the sound of that sharp, dark voice.

Yes, there he was. The devil duke that everyone talked about. The reverberating roar. The man of power.

But she wasn’t frightened of him. Not at all. There was something lion-like about him. And yet she did not think that he would pounce upon her.

A friend.
