She continues, “Tom mentioned Liam’s a lawyer, and I’m kind of in need of one.” She pauses, eyes widening, and throws up her hands. “Not like that.”

“Not like what?”

“Nothing criminal. It’s work-related. I did a big job for a friend, and she stiffed me.” Daisy pushes back her chair. “That’s actually what sent me on this trip. I needed to clear my head and decide what to do about it. My only recourse is to sue, and she’s a friend, and she went through a vicious divorce, so I feel terrible but...” She inhales. “It’s a lot of money. I cut her a break and lived on my savings and now...”

A sheepish smile. “And this is far more of an explanation than you need. The point is that I really should talk to a lawyer. When Tom mentioned Liam, I thought I’d look him up. He doesn’t handle this sort of thing, though, and one look at his firm’s website tells me he’s out of my pay range.”

“You could have just asked me what kind of law he does.”

“I didn’t want to put you on the spot, and I did need reading material.” She nods at the books. “But now I’ve made things worse, getting caught on his web page. That looks creepy.”

“No, it just surprised me. He doesn’t do that sort of law, but he might be able to talk to you about it.”

Her thin face lights up. “That would be awesome.”

“Now, if you want to check out those books...”

“Already done. The librarians were kind enough to give me a visitor’s card.” She rises and hefts the stack under one arm. “Ready when you are.”

We walk outside, and then I hand her the keys and say that I need to use the library restroom. When I’m sure she hasn’t followed me, I slip over to the computer she was using. The browser is still open, now on the library home page. I click the history, and it comes up blank.

Is that the library setting for privacy? Or did Daisy clear it? I want to check another terminal, but there are only three computers, the other two in use by seniors hunting and pecking. I wait as long as I can before I leave with yet another question unanswered.
