He peers up as I finish peeling off the patch. “Shit, that’s some leak. It’s a wonder she didn’t notice it before now.”

“Has it been raining much?”

“No. Guess that’d explain why she didn’t notice it. Which reminds me of a story...”

He launches into it, but I miss the first part. I’m busy fingering the edges of the hole. I hadn’t paid much attention until he mentioned it, but it is a big one. The roof is obviously in rough shape, so I’m not surprised that there’s a leak but...

I’m something of an expert when it comes to leaks. Repairing the damage from one is a common reason to hire someone like me. Also, I’m at the age where if my friends have houses, they’re probably old with bad roofs that they can’t afford to replace.

No matter what the cause, a roof leak means that water drips relentlessly onto the drywall below, and you get a wet spot that eventually breaks through. What you end up with is a soggy hole.

This is not soggy. The edges are sharp and jabbing upward, as if someone found a damp spot and jammed something through it... to create a hole.
