No, just fucking no.

I sit out the front of the house, staring at the light coming from the windows.

I didn’t want to leave. But there’s fuck all inside, and if we’re really doing this, then if nothing else, we need some fucking food.

I probably should have sent him. Hoped that he’d get lost and just never reappear again. But I know that wasn’t how my luck was going to go.

The only bit of luck I can claim having right now was that we got to Calli before Ricardo and his men.

I have no clue how quickly they were going to act, but the fear in Ant’s eyes as he delivered what he’d overheard told me that they weren’t going to hesitate for long.

Which meant we couldn’t wait.

I needed my girl safe, and if that meant going to extreme measures and siding with the enemy for a bit, then I was okay with that.

For her. Always for her.

The burner phone in my pocket rings, and I damn near jump out of my skin as it rips from every speaker surrounding me.

“Boss,” I say the second Evan’s call has connected.

“Everything good?” he confirms.

“Yeah. She’s safe. And will be for as long as the threat is out there,” I confirm.

“And you’re still refusing to tell me who your rat is?” Suspicion is more than evident in his tone.

“What did your snakes say? Anything different?”

“No. They’ve got a hit out on her,” he says, his voice cracking with concern.

“Then you need to trust me.”

“You’re not even meant to be working. When your father—”

“I’m not working. I’m studying. And so is Calli. Safely.”

“I swear to fucking God, Deimos. If you fuck this up and she—”

“Nothing is going to happen to her. She’s safe. No one knows where we are.”

“I’m aware,” he mutters, his irritation clear that I’ve even refused to tell him our location.

Both Ant and I have our trackers off. I killed off Calli’s the second we got her, and we drove up here in a van with fake plates on.

The only way anyone is going to find us is if that Italian fuck inside squeals.

And if he does, there’s going to be zero chance of me sparing his life for a third time.

“I’m trusting you, Deimos. Look after my girl.”

“You’ve got my word, Boss.”

I cut the call before turning the phone off, and the second I’m out of the car, I drop it to the ground and crush it beneath my foot.

I’m not leaving anything to fucking chance here. There is no way any other Italian motherfucker is getting anywhere near my girl.

Grabbing the bags from the boot, I head toward the house, my eyes shooting everywhere as my paranoia gets the better of me.
