Did he know? What she and Agone had done last night, did he know?

“Morning.”

She’d done nothing wrong and shouldn’t feel awkward but did. “Thank you for the coffee and donuts.” Hopefully, he brought it and not Agone.

“No thanks needed, but you’re welcome.”

Standing in the little kitchen gawking at him wasn’t an option. She turned and poured herself a cup. A bit of cream, a bit of sugar, a warm glazed donut, and it was perfect. The breakfast of champions.

“After you eat, we’ll start training again.”

She choked when coffee went down the wrong way. He was there, pounding on her back until air filled her lungs. “Training again?” She pulled away. “Gonna send another darkling to attack me? By the way, what is a darkling?”

“Agone didn’t share the information?”

The snark was subtle. She could do subtle. “No. We were preoccupied.”

Not a single expression crossed his face, except for the slightest flare of gold in his cerulean eyes. She’d bet her tiny paycheck he was affected. “Where is Agone?”

“Probably in Hell, though he didn’t share his destination. He will return.”

She nodded. Probably in Hell made sense. Recharging, probably.

“Darklings are soul suckers.” Seren redirected the conversation. She was grateful. “They drain a human and leave behind a husk.”

That’s what she felt, the demon draining her. If she hadn’t become angry and found her power, it would’ve succeeded. She’d come close, so close to dying, again.

“Darklings are one of few demons that can escape Hell and feed on humans. They’re lower caste, bottom of the barrel. Like most demons, their primary weakness is sunlight. They can only come out at night.”

Did that apply to Agone? Is that why he vanished in the morning? Seren hinted that was the case. She’d ask him when he appeared sometime tonight.“Didn’t know angels could lasso a demon to do its bidding.”

“Normally, I can’t. A trace of your blood on a deer did the trick.”

“Wow.” Her appetite fled. “I don’t need training. I figured it out.”

“Have you?”

She hated his condescending tone. “Yes. I get mad and my powers kick in.” Like the Hulk.

“Good. Then you’ll have no problem using them on me.”

She choked again. “On you? W-Why would I want to do that?”

His gaze narrowed. “You’re angry with me.”

She didn’t deny it.

“Hate me.”

That wasn’t true, but she didn’t deny it either.

Seren smirked. “You can hone your skills on me.”

It was tempting. “Not afraid I’ll kill you?”

“No.” He shook his head. “You’re not strong enough. But soon, you will be. Soon, you’ll be deadly enough to kill anything.”

It sounded ominous. A forewarning. “Guess that’s a good thing since I have demons hunting me. Do I have angels hunting me too?” A valid question.
