“As they develop, yes. At first, they will just be tiny little humans, just like everybody else. However, as they start to grow, the DNA will kick in, and they will end up being cubs. The heart, lungs, bone structure, and everything else grows differently. You will likely give birth by cesarean section because of their size and form.”
I nodded. This was a lot to process.
She hugged me again and said, “You’ll do great. I’m here to help you. I know you’ve made friends with Madison and Lanie, and they’ll help you, too.”
Dr. Ursa saw the look on my face and said, “News gets around quick.”
I thanked her and left. I headed to the pharmacy, which also sold pacifiers and other baby items. I wondered what size diaper baby bears wore.
My head was buzzing. This was an exciting new time for me. I had a gorgeous husband and now, babies. It happened so fast, I felt as though I had to be dreaming.
As I headed home and started making dinner, I could not stop smiling. My heart was beating wildly, and I felt like dancing.
I was cooking as though I were on autopilot. I was trying to wrap my mind around the fact that there were tiny bear cubs and humans inside of my body. They were growing and were going to be huge. I tried to imagine having children as big as Madison and Gage in human form, let alone bear form, but I just couldn’t make it happen. This was going to be an entirely new experience for me.
My focus was on images of two bears rolling around on the grass then playing catch as humans, and I didn’t hear people outside until the front door swung open.
I turned around with a huge smile on my face, expecting Gage and excited to tell him my news. Instead, it was Amon who stood there with three of his friends. The smile quickly faded from my face as did all of the color.
“Not excited to see me, dear sister?” he asked.
“I’m always excited to see friends and family,” I answered. “I’m not so excited to see people who are meaning to cause trouble or are going to cause harm to Gage or me. Which category are you in?”
“That all depends, sister. For now, I insist that you be my guest. Please turn off your stove and oven and come with me.”
I looked at him and his friends standing behind him. This was not a fight I could win, and I certainly couldn’t risk the tiny babies inside of me. I would have to go with him and try to find a way out later.
Sighing heavily, I turned around to turn off the stove and oven. I thought briefly about flinging boiling hot water on his face, but I thought that I would end up on the losing end of that battle, anyway.
I asked if I could get a jacket since it was chilly.
“I’m not a total jerk,” he said. “Where is it?”
That statement is up for debate.
I pointed to the closet where I had hung up my coat earlier. “It’s in there. The blue one.”
He pulled it out and helped me put it on.
One of the men stepped forward and put his hand on me. I couldn’t stop myself. I grabbed the pot closest to me and flung it on him.
“Don’t you ever put your hands on me,” I snarled at him. “I was coming along peacefully.”
The man turned into a bear, knocking over some furniture and breaking the closet door that Amon had not yet closed.
He started to charge at me, and Amon yelled, “Stop.”
The bear stopped immediately.
Amon growled at the bear, “I told you not to touch her. No one touches her except for me.”
He grabbed my arm and jerked me outside, clearly angry. I heard the bear that had stayed inside, wrecking my house. I was just glad that I always put my notes and my work computer away in a safe place. I couldn’t afford to lose everything I had on it.
Amon quickly undressed and changed into his bear form. One of the other guys lifted me up onto his back. The man whispered, “Sorry,” in my ear.
I wondered if he was truly sorry, or if he was just saying that, hoping I would tell Gage when Gage found me so maybe Gage would not kill him.
The other two men turned into bear form. The third came out of my now wrecked house.
