“Hey,” Killian said and drew my attention. “I’m only telling you this to keep you updated. It’s not for you to start something. These are rumors about before they returned, so we don’t know what’s happening now since Colin signed the contract. He’s not stupid. He knows we must be watching him.”
“Watching him from outside his pack,” I rebutted. “We can’t tell what’s happening on the inside.”
I wondered if he ever put his hands on Diana, and my claws extended to pierce my palm.
“You said it yourself, and I saw it,” Killian said. “Diana can take care of herself.”
“Not against Colin. Very few people can handle Colin, Killian, and while brave, she’s still not strong enough to face him.” I stood up, unable to sit any longer. “I’ll find out what’s going on.”
Killian groaned while rubbing at his temple. “How do you plan on doing that? The contract is to enforce peace on both sides.”
“I’m aware,” I growled. “I wrote it.”
“Iwrote it,” Killian drawled while standing up. “You just told me what to include. Just be careful, Kaleem, we don’t want Colin to start a war, but I don’t want you to start one either. Okay? If you want to rekindle your mate bond with her, do so but be prepared to butt heads with Colin and think about the repercussions on both packs.”
“So, have you heard from the Council?” I asked, and Killian laughed.
“Don’t try to be slick, brother. I know your tricks. I’m not leaving, not any time soon, so get used to me sticking my nose in your business.” He turned to leave. “Someone has to keep you in line, alpha, and get some food. I heard your stomach growling from outside.”
“Thank you, my darling Luna,” I yelled while he closed the door behind him, and I turned to stare out the window.
The sky was bright tonight, filled with a sea of stars.
Diana and I had met during a night as bright as this one, and it was infuriating that she was in this forest only a few miles away. I needed to see her.
If Colin was being abusive, I wasn’t going to agree with Diana anymore about remaining in her pack. Mate or not, sitting by and allowing this to happen made me complicit with Colin’s abuse, which wasn’t acceptable.
If he was no longer abusing his members or if it was a rumor to begin with that he’d taken things so far, so be it. But if it was true, Diana wasn’t going to stay.
My wolf growled, and my fist went through the window, shattering the glass.
I hadn’t fought for her hard enough before, but I would now. I had my pack to think about, my family, but she was my family whether anyone liked it or not.
