“I have no idea. Trust me, I was just as surprised as you seem to be by the fact that it did happen.”

“What did Tristan and Barbara say about it?” he asked.

“That the wolf had to be inside me my whole life, but I was weakened after doing a spell, and she might have sensed the danger from the lynx and came out to save me.”

“That’s all?” He asked, looking at her closely.

She bit her lip. “They also said that the mating bite might have awakened her … and that shunning you might have displeased my wolf and caused her to come to the surface.”

“Ah. I see.”

“Yep, now you see. And, now you can go.”

He didn’t look happy at that, but he also seemed like he was willing to listen. Perhaps seeing that she was okay was enough to allow him to respect her wishes. “We’re going to have to talk at some point. You know that, right?”

“I can’t do this with you right now.” She threw up her hands in exasperation.

“Can’t or won’t?” he demanded.

“Both!”

“Why?” he inched closer to her, his heat and scent enveloping her.

She slowly backed away from him. “I’m fucking terrified, Rhett. Of you. Of this relationship! Don’t you get it? I fell so damn hard and so fucking fast for you … I just can’t,” Sara shouted as tears slipped from her eyes.

“Why? What’s wrong with falling hard and fast for me? Especially when I feel the same way? I love you, Sara. Is that what you need to hear?”

“No. It’s not what I need to hear or what I want to hear. I can’t!”

“Why?” he demanded

When she didn’t answer, he made an assumption. “So you’d rather walk away because you fear what could be?”

“Stop. Just stop. You need to go.”

“Not until we talk about this.”

Sara steeled her spine and pulled herself together. She couldn’t afford to lose her shit right now. “Go.”

“Sara, please.”

God, he was so freaking hot she couldn’t take it. Even when she had just professed her intent to stay away from him, every part of her wanted to kiss him and take away his pain and sadness.

She watched as his muscles flexed with one simple motion. Sweet goodness, she was a goner. Drool pooled in the corners of her mouth. Heat shot straight to her damn core.

Mmm. He’s ours, her wolf’s voice inside her head said.

Even so, she pointed Rhett to the door.
