She didn’t have to tell me twice. We locked it back up and replaced the brick then went to the car. Fortunately, the drive to our next destination didn’t involve me sleeping. Still, I considered the options of that security system, why would you put that in place for just three boxes? Or maybe the three boxes that were all that was left behind by someone else cleaning out the facility?
Or maybe her father left them there? But then why would he?
Drew didn’t offer me any speculation on the drive, nor did she tell me who we were going to see. I didn’t ask, either. Probably better I didn’t know. I had a feeling whomever she was going to see might not be any happier to see her than Dion had been.
Fucker.
Not for the first time, I was glad the asshole was dead. Still, when she pulled up to the port side warehouse and parked, it was after sundown. A bell dinged in the distance and when she opened the door, the sound of water lapping against the side of boats and the docks themselves drifted inside along with the faint odors of salt, wet, and fuel.
“Stay here,” she said and motioned to the keys, which she’d left in the ignition. “But leave the car off. It’ll keep you dark and fewer people will notice you. I could be a while.”
I nodded slowly. Should I offer to go with her? “Are you going to need me in there?”
“No,” she said easily. “I don’t think so. If I do, I’ll call.” She tapped her phone. “But I’ll have this on silent.”
Right, don’t call her.
“Rick won’t like you going in there alone.” Really? I went there?
Her expression turned almost amused. “Then I guess we won’t tell him, will we?”
Right. “Because he’d definitely blame me,” I said and she winked, then closed the door. Three steps away from the car, she fucking vanished. Like she was made out of the ether, or some supernatural goddess of death like I’d dubbed her that first day.
Fuck me, what was I doing here?
I scrubbed a hand over my face and then stared at the building in front of me. I had no desire to go in there and watch her kill someone. And at the same time, I swore my dick twitched at the thought of her opening a can of whoopass on someone who damn well deserved it. I could also still taste her on my tongue, even after another energy drink.
Still… I waited.
Fifteen minutes turned into thirty.
Then an hour.
I was damn near twitching when I let myself out of the car and paced to the back of it. The shadows were deeper here. How long should I wait before I went after her? I’d checked my phone a dozen times.
No messages.
I had just done my fifth circuit around the car when headlights cut through the gloom. I ducked behind her car and crouched to hide as the vehicle glided over the wet asphalt, the tires echoing in the night accompanied by the slap of water ebbing and flowing.
The crunch of the tires coming to a stop and the engine shutting off had me swearing under my breath. I eased to the end of the car to peek around it. The interior light came on for the other car and illuminated a sandy-haired guy as he shoved his way out. The door closed and left him in shadows before I could make out his face.
Fuck.
He started toward the building Drew had been heading toward.
Fuck. Fuckity. Fuck. Fuck.
I pulled out my phone and sent her a text.
I’d barely hit send when I remembered her words about having the phone on silent.
Fuck.
The guy vanished, just like she had.
I leaned against the side of the car and swore under my breath. I couldn’t let him sneak up on her alone.
I just…couldn’t.
