“Dad,” I hear my son yell from down the hall.
That helped.
“What?” I yell back.
“Oh good, you’re up.” His head peeks around the corner of my open door. “Will you make me pancakes?”
“I will. You wanna get the ingredients out while I get dressed?”
“Yup,” he says, then bolts for the kitchen.
Arthur...Oh man. Being a single dad has made a few ladies lose interest quickly. I never blame them, though. Not every woman is ready to fill the role Arthur and I need in our lives. I haven’t gotten to spend a good amount of time with Lily but from the time I have, I can tell she has a caring and sweet heart. I’m going to keep my hopes up that my status isn’t going to be a game changer this time.
“All ready,” Arthur says as I shuffle into the kitchen.
“Good job, buddy.”
I go about mixing all of the ingredients while Arthur feeds the dogs. That’s his chore every morning.
“What are we doing today, Dad?”
“There’s an adoption event at the local pet store. I thought we could stop by.”
He looks at me with wide eyes.
“What kind of adoption?” he asks.
“Kittens.”
“Dad,” he says, a little more serious. “We pretty much need a kitten.”
“Oh we do, do we?”
I pour the batter in small circles on the griddle.
“Yes. I’ll take care of it. I promise.”
“What about Ore and Oh? Dogs and cats don’t always get along.”
“I will search up how to have them meet.”
He’s saying all the right things. Which doesn’t surprise me, he is my son after all.
“I guess having a cat around would be good. For the mice we may get.”
“Yes!” he yells. “As soon as I eat, I’ll start my research.”
I nod my head as I slide a few pancakes onto a plate, smother them in syrup then hand them to Arthur.
“It doesn’t start for a couple more hours, you have lots of time.”
He smiles through a mouth full of pancakes and it makes me laugh. Arthur is the best thing that has happened in my life. I thought it was falling in love with his mom, but the love wasn’t even enough for her. The love I have for Arthur is unconditional.
I sit with Arthur while we finish our breakfast but he’s too excited. He eats as fast as he can then jets to the computer.
“I’m going to go feed the rabbit and chickens, okay bud?”
“Yup. Don’t forget the carrot.”
