“I thought it was.” I wink at my sister then gather the leashes that she’s finished.
“You can’t wait to meet your niece, and you know it.”
“True, but I don’t envy you at all.” I smile big at her before filling the hooks on the wall.
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. It looks so cool. I put artificial grass and used resin to make what looks like a puddle on the floor beneath them, so it gives the illusion of a rainbow coming from the puddle. So cute.
“Hey Lil,” my sister says.
“Yeah,” I reply as I turn to face her.
She moves the box and pats on the cushion next to her. Great, probably another talk about why I’m single and that there are plenty of men out there if I would just put myself out there. I roll my eyes and plop down onto the cushion.
“So…”
I huff. “Stop it. This isn’t a single lady talk.”
“Well, that’s a relief.”
“Well, sorta not anyways.”
I put my face into my hands and groaned.
“Listen, Jacob has a friend that just got back into town. He was gone for a year up to Alaska for something or other, but now he’s back and we both agree that we think you two would click.”
“So a blind date? Last time your husband had a friend who turned out to not like women...that was a great date, let me tell ya.”
“Yeah, I know. So what if instead we have dinner at our place Friday. I’ll invite you and Jacob will invite Vance.”
“Vance, is that really his name?” I ask her.
“Yes. Now stop it. It will be fun,” she replies, and she pats my knee.
I take in a slow deep breath then let it out with a huff. “Fine, but I am only doing this because I love you.”
She squeals and immediately grabs her phone from the small coffee table.
“I have to let Jacob know.”
“Whatever,” I say.
I grab more leashes, a few collars that are tagged, and add them to my rainbow. Maybe this guy will be the pot of gold at the end of my endless rainbow of horribly bad dates...but not likely.
“Aren’tyouexcitedfordinner tonight?” my sister asks me. It’s Friday and tonight I get to meet Vance. I’m not getting my hopes up. I think I am meant to be single. Living on a couple acres with a small hobby farm. My company will be my animals, and I’m actually okay with that. But itwouldbe better to have someone to share it with.
“Excited? No. I told you, I’m only doing this to make you happy.”
“I’ve met him before, he’s really nice and not bad to look at.” She winks at me before continuing to clean the coffee area.
“Whatever,” I reply, rolling my eyes.
All the guys around here look the same to me. Country boys with plaid or ripped, dirty t-shirts, Wrangler jeans and boots. And let’s not forget the ball cap. Blah, I’m over it.
“You ready to close up?” I ask Layla.
“Yes!” she replies, with a bit too much enthusiasm as I lock the front door and turn off the lights.
“Please. Don’t get your hopes up,” I say, as we exit from the back of the shop.
